Practice Morse code on a Game Boy ROM.

Morse Boy v0.6.0 is a free homebrew Morse-code trainer created by dansciurus (Big D), with ChatGPT assistance.

Explore a live Decoder chart, listen and answer in Receive RX, or practice sending with the A button as a straight key.

What is included

• Decoder chart with two orientations and a live sequence/decoded-character display.
• RX Learn with 13 freely selectable cumulative stages, plus Practice covering letters and digits. Replay and optional hints are available.
• TX Speed Drill, a 64-word bank and a 144-cell Scratch page with word spaces.
• TX requested-speed settings from 05–99 WPM, a complete controls guide and 11 actual emulator screenshots.

How to play

Download and extract the ZIP, then load MorseBoy.gb in a Game Boy emulator. Map the D-pad, A, B, SELECT and START. Disable turbo, auto-fire and fast-forward while practicing timed input. Press START at the splash and choose a mode.

Hold A for tone and release for silence in Decoder/TX. See GUIDE.md in the download for the full controls and timing behavior.

Testing and limitations

Morse Boy is emulator-tested. The public README reports human acceptance in BGB on Windows, automated PyBoy tests and a verified game-specific EmuELEC / RetroArch / Gambatte R2 remap. Exact versions and handheld model are undocumented.

Original Game Boy hardware and flash-cartridge compatibility remain unverified. Other emulator/device combinations may behave differently. A physical Morse-key interface has not been verified, and there is no iambic-keyer mode. The requested TX speed range is not a guarantee of performance on every device.

No battery-backed saving is included. RX best streak lasts for the current session. TX supports letters and digits, not punctuation. RX Practice plays at approximately 22 WPM; Decoder uses separate fixed timing.
